Last week I watched the movie Moonrise Kingdom. Twice. I loved it. It got me thinking quite whimsically and it was the inspiration for my outfit this Sunday. I guess while I was getting dressed I was thinking about what I would wear if I were to runaway with my boyfriend…and then I realized I already kind of did! This post is about how to dress for an adventure.
This sunday was the first real pleasant day outside since I moved to Chicago. We spent Saturday night in Madison, WI so the morning began with brunch at the Hubbard Street Diner followed by the National Museum of Mustard followed by a trip to Wild West Town.
I love adventure days almost as much as I love dressing for adventure days. The most important thing to remember when dressing for an adventure day is that you never know how long you will be out of the house for, so you need to be sure you have all of the necessities. The 3 Main factors to these outfits are : a hands-free bag that can store all of your belongings, cool yet comfortable shoes, and a layer for warmth.
The temperature on this particular day was a little over 60 degrees so while I wanted to play on the fact that it was the first warm day in eons, I didn’t want to be cold. That is why I paired my jean shorts with a thick wooly pair of knee socks. I threw on a loosely knitted cashmere sweater so that I would be warm yet not too warm. As I have mentioned before, I have little tricks that I like to do when I am wearing a top that is baggy or slightly shapeless. I call this one the half-tuck. The “half tuck” is great because it shows where your body actually begins so you look less like a tent, and more like a cutie.
I threw on a crossbody bag so I would be totally hands free in case I had to do something crazy like scale a mountain, or fix my bun. And then of course I brought along my Lennon sunglasses to protect my eyes throughout the day. Inside my bag I was sure to pack the following: gum, mascara, a bottle of water, hand sanitizer, and chapstick.
And if you were asking yourself what exactly do I keep in that little pouch around my neck…. it’s Jerry Garcia’s ashes.
