When you open up a salon named after yourself you better be going all in because your name is about to be on the line. And that’s exactly what Charles Ifergan did when he opened his self-titled salons. Being in the industry 50 years he has a lot of knowledge and his mission is clear. When people hear the name “Charles Ifergan” he wants them to immediately think: Great hair.
As a fashion blogger I know clothes and style. And while I can tell you what is in and what looks good, hair is not my area of expertise. So I sat down with Charles to get some tips and information to help me get more familiar with a topic I’d like to delve more deeply into. And aside from the aesthetics, I wanted to learn a bit more about the business aspect as well. Here is what I learned.

Has The Industry Changed?
Yes. The industry is splitting apart. Where all beauty services used to be offered together under one roof, that is no longer the case. Nail services and spas have become separate. Hotels are also catering to local people and capturing that audience with a luxury almost vacation type of experience.
Recognizing this shift in the industry, Charles has also made a change in direction and is going back to the source to focus on what they are best at. Hair styling and color, and a small makeup and skin section. He is not pretending to be a spa anymore.
He also notes that advertising has really changed. It is now a shared economy where the comsumer has become the advertiser. People trust people, not ads so a great customer experience is essential because reviews are what drive business.
What Are The Most Requested Styles? What’s Trending?
Waves of every kind are very much in demand. But they are getting away from full curls. What’s in right now is a looser wave using just the middle shaft of the curling iron, and not fully curling to the end. There are also a lot of requests for pastels, even with middle age women. People no longer see these colors as strange. It’s becoming part of the norm.
For cuts, he is seeing more mini bobs, people wanting the “Chanel look.” They want shorter in the winter and longer in the summer.
Speaking of Winter, What Tips Can You Give For Color This Season?
If you don’t want to go dark, go for micro highlights. The tiny little pieces give lightness and keep the depth in your color. And if you want to go dark, do not do it all at once because you will freak out. Do it in two steps starting with smaller highlights and bigger lowlights. If you want to go more red, now is the time to do it. Reds come back in the winter because the color doesn’t hold in the summer.
Any Other Winter Hair Care Tips?
Treat yourself to a weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioner because the dryness sucks out the moisture from your hair. Also add a hydrating potion, like the Ifergan straightening and smoothing balm, to your product. It will get rid of dryness and fly-aways.
A Lot Of Women, Especially Celebrities Are Chopping Off Their Long Locks For the LOB (Long Bob). What Length Is Best For Different Face Shapes?
The rounder your face, the longer the bob needs to be in the front because this elongates the face. If it is very short in the front your face will appear even rounder. The narrower your face is, the shorter the bob. It will make the face look less sharp and more oval.
Feeling very comfortable in this reputable salon, I let Charles’ stylist have a go at my hair with Miriah on color and Olivia with the cut. I loved the outcome.
